chevy 454 carbed engine question
I'm looking at a used motorhome that has a 454 chevy powerplant. The guy selling has done a nice job of upgrading all the mechanicals and it seems to really run strong. He is running the timing advanced quite a bit and while looking through all the compartments I found a dozen bottles of lead additive for the fuel. I asked him about this and he said he was doing it as a precaution since the engine is from 1982. Is he trying to mask a problem or does this sound legit?

With the timing advanced you usually have to run premium gas to prevent pinging. Maybe that is what the lead aditive is for.

What year is it? Lead addititives are used for older motors, when lead was put in the gas....Meaning the valve seats where not changed to use unleaded gas.

thats what he meant about preventitive, unleaded gas was available in 82 and I believe it says "unleaded only" on the gas cap.

I just can't see why he would do that. It doesn't add any real power or fuel milage. Maybe a couple of percentage points for both. It's not really worth the expense of the lead additive. I'm not sure, but it might be worth finding out if lead additive damages modern valve seats. 1982 would definitely be unleaded only. Maybe it's an older replacement motor.

That's what I was thinking too. Or maybe older (pre-unleaded) heads?

lead additive is for motors that don't have hardened valve seats. lead also will clog the catalytic convertor.

Yeah. If he's got the ignition advanced far enough that he needs to run additive, the big question is why? There's no reason for that at all. I'm wondering if it's got a detonation problem.
