Today was a good day. I have purchased the begining of what i am sure will be a fine motor, I'm not looking for the fastest Firebird. But a respectable Firebird.

We start with a purchase of a used 355 Small block Chevy.

The 355.

1. 350 4 bolt Main
2. punched .30 over <hence. a 355 ;)>
3. SR Torquer Heads
4. TRW Forged Flattops
5. Performaer RMP Intake
6. CompCam Camshaft <stats not to be disclosed ;)>

Here she is on her brand new engine Stand

Today was a good day, Broke down the motor to it's block <thanks for the hand Dutch> and found what we need.

The crank was though to need replacement. However, with inspection it may be saved. The problem is a busted bolt on the forward end. COntact to a machine shop tommorow will let us know if it can be saved.

2 Spings on teh heads where busted. and one push rod. It would be an issue. but see below.

on a bad note, the cam is damaged. While dissasembly of the motor was taking place we found several lobes where warped... so know we will need a good matchup for th emotor.

The bad news: More Money

The good news: More power.

and here she is.

It looks like the motor got over-revved resulting in some valvetrain damage. Two busted valve springs, one broken pushrod, and two dead lobes on the cam. The crank on the other hand looks like it's in good shape. Some drilling and tapping to get the broken balancer bolt out should fix it right up.

With the right cam, new springs and a set of lifters this motor's got some potential. ;)

sense this time, i have been waiting for my parts, so allot of work has been stopped on the Bird <hence the shift to the mustang>

The engine has been repainted, Pistions cleans. and i have spent the last 3 days Porting the heads as well...

<no pics of that :P>

I installed the new springs, reinstalled the valves, and have cleaned the motor.

The motor is bright Red, with everything still disassembled...once again, i'm waiting on my Crank, bearings, and rings. will followup when this is being done and is complete.

I have the cam, Lifters, and such, so once this has been done <crank installed> this motor will almost be ready for it's new home...

anyone want to buy a perfectly good running 305?

If that's the one that came in the T/A then I can fill you in on it Slinky.

It's an 86 305-4bbl (LG4) motor. The odo broke while I owned the car.. ..the motor probably has no more than 80Kmi on it. I've owned the car for about 12 years and it spent every winter under a cover and was always treated very well. IIRC it's been using Mobil-1 synthetic since I bought the car.

It hadn't been started for over three years when I sold it to Khyron. We put in a new battery, poured a tiny bit of gas down the carb throat, stabbed the throttle two or three times and then keyed it.

VROOM.

It started right up and ran like a watch.

The only thing "wrong" with it is a redrilled/tapped valve cover bolt (snappeed one while installing the chrome covers). I did a compression check on it about 8 years ago and back then everything was within spec. Dunno if Khyron is selling the tranny and accessories but the TH700R4 it's bolted to has a mild shift kit in it, the starter is almost new (genuine GM rebuild), it has a Moroso starter heat shield and Edelbrock smog-legal tubular headers (F-body application).

Aha.

But I think there is some kinda rear seal/tranny-spline issue with the '86 motor, yes? I seem to recall that you cannot bolt most trans to that particular block's crank as-is.

I figure you have that one sorted but it's worth mentioning to any prospective buyers (if I remember that detail correctly.. ..and I might be all wrong; it's been a while)!

It's not an issue with the motor bolting to the tranny. It's the output shaft of the tranny. 87 and older have a different spline count than the later ones. Basically, if you swap out the tranny for a newer one you have to swap the driveshaft and the yoke as well.
