Sophisticated toughness

Truck Trend, September 2005

The second of the revolutionary concept models out at this show is the Jeep Compass, also sharing the same platform as the Jeep Patriot. Clearly going after the rally sport crowd, Jeep is looking to the Compass to give the Evo IX and WRX Sti a run for their money. Still sporting the seven-slot grille, Jeep designers have gone for sophisticated rally toughness, rather than trail-rated 4x4 competence. Still, Jeep assures us that this will be the most capable Jeep in its class, with tractive ability at all four wheels that none of its competitors can match. The Compass will run the same 2.4-liter I-4 from the Patriot (and Caliber), but you can expect some power massaging beyond the estimated 170 horsepower predicted for the optional sport package. The second-generation continuously variable transmission is also in the concept Compass, as will be -- we’re guessing -- a six-speed manual transmission. This is a completely new segment for Jeep and will be an important test as to whether buyers are interested in a Jeep vehicle that doesn’t have some type of trail-rated capabilities. We’re told to look for the sporty car-based rally star to compete with Toyota’s Scions, the Pontiac Vibe, and Mazda 3, with a considerable price advantage.

i don't know why they got rid of the cherokee ....those trucks were cheap and dependable ....they are everywhere on the road ...i do like the patriot but doubt i will buy a truck the next time around if gas is what it is .....once the Cherokee goes ...i'll sell the trailer and probably get something better on gas

I need something cleared up. Is it true that Jeep has a Pick-up out that has a small diesel engine. But you can't buy it in NY because it will not pass emissions. But you can buy it in VT.

Any info??

The WRX would be underpowered without the Turbo as well. If they turbo this thing, you'll see the same juice.

but the AWD is what I think they ment toward target, not power ;)

Yeah I see what you mean. Ehh, it's too close to a ford focus to have a jeep on the front...

A lot of it will probably boil down to net HP (power at the wheels). A stock WRX (and EVO for tha matter) puts a lot less down on a chassis dyno than it does at the crank. Dunno how much power loss the Jeep system accounts for vs. the imports...

It'll be hard to market a rally-inspired vehicle from a company with less rally cred than its' two competitors (Mitsu and Sub). It's even harder when rally racing is probably on par with lawnmower racing in terms of popularity here in the US.

But then again most every street-going EVO and WRX gets used for rally-type driving about as much as yer average Jeep Liberty is used for rock crawling. In the end everything with plates on it is a street car and probably gets used as such so really these things are just themes rather than bloodlines.

I can definitely see some Toyo Matrix/Ponitac Vibe and also some of the newer Mazdas in the D-pillar and roofline of that Jeep. Small wagons and SUVs are selling really well right now (wait for the Nissan Cube to arrive) but there isn't a legit AWD entry to speak of right now.....and Jeep definitely has the AWD credibility. If they can do what they claim and aim it more at the Vibe than the EVO I think it might do well for 'em.

I thought they were bringing back an old name like the power wagon or something similar. It was supposed to 4 cylinder diesel putting out around 200 hp. If someone would produce a mid-size truck with a 4 or 6 cylinder diesel I would be all over it in a couple of years.
