Mopar Muscle...

Quote:
"Everything Old Is New Again

Enter the '09 Dodge Challenger.
There is little to speculate about when it comes to Mopar Muscle's opinion of the new Charger. DCX failed to win over the purists and '60s Mopar aficionados, apart from waving the magic 425hp combination in front of their noses. A curvaceous, sharply designed sedan with many creature comfrots, the Charger fell sort of hard-core enthusiasts' aspirations. Never intended to be a two-door sports coupe, the Charger was aimed at te suburbanites and professionals an ultra-competitive market.

According to Rick Kranz of Automotive News, as reported in June's Autoweek, 6/13/05, the Challenger, expected to debut in 2009 on the LX platform, will share the same design cues as the Chrysler 300C, Charger, and Magnum station wagon. The final drafting of the Challenger is still somewhat of a mystery, as "Chrysler officials are not talking about the car, but industry analysts say they are familar with the plans." The new Challenger is expected to compete with the retro-designed Mustang that has recently exceeded initial sales projections, causing output numbers to be increased for the next production year. The numbers give credence to America's desire for automakers to pay tribute to their musclecar genealogy with designs influenced by past ponycars. "It is a two-door, essentially a competitor for the Mustang," says Catherine Madden, a production analyst for Global Insight, an industry research group. "They are really excited about it. "Madden states the sports coupe is planned to debut in early 2009, the same time that the next-generation LX vehicles are to be re-engineered and restyled.

Though Chrysler officials have kept a tight lid on the possible designs of the car, production numbers projections have been released. Estimated to match the venerale Mustang's production, DCX plans on selling 60,000 to 70,000 cars in the first year. "The enthusiasm for that product,"Madden continues, "is very big." With the introduction of the Charger, Charger R/T, Daytona R/T, and SRT-8 this year, DCX will be testing the waters with the recent shot in the arm to the reception of the Charger and other SRT manifestations, the dream of the totally moder, two-door, 425-horse Hemi-powered Challenger might becoume a reality."

Well, to be honest.... I think you can only make a car so sleak before it starts to look like every other car. In other words, I think we are past the age of increasing aerodynamics by making cars sleak and rounded. I think everyone has realized that cars are starting to look way too much alike when you round and smooth them off like they have. Currently nothing stands out to me like the new Mustang and exactly the opposite is true for the GTO. Here stands a 400hp monster of a motor in a smaller car than the camaro and yet noone seems to notice it. Why.... because noone seems to notice it. A GTO can easily roll by me with my windows rolled up without me even noticing. That shouldn't happen to a guy like me... especially if I like the car.

I guess what I am driving at is.... I think the car makers are thinking they might want to head into that era where their car was different again.... you know what it is coming down the road. Which wouldn't be a bad thing in my mind. You don't think it's a cavalier until you hear the exhaust note.

I will say though that they need to start coming up with new names and saying that they are "derived from the Challenger lineage."

Next thing you know ol' MoPar is gonna put one of those bigass rice-wings on the back of the neon, spruce it up with a bodykit and call it the "superbird".

Ok well, obviously the retro styling is in now-a-days but Dodge has failed in its part...Ford has come through with the new Mustang which is an actual "sports" car that looks and acts the part (as long as you get the GT or better)...

Whereas the new Charger and (I am assuming...) the 09 Challenger will not. I am willing to bet that the challenger will look similar to the charger and have somewhere near the same amount of horsepower. But never the less they both of these newer versions of the Dodge classics are simply semi-cool looking grocery getters with some power to get you and that gallon of milk and diapers you bought home faster.

Excellent point Carz.

Seems to me that Cadillac (of all makes!) is about the only GM brand that is building new performance models that can stand on their own without resorting to 30+ year-old name dropping. The CTS is the CTS, not the "Eldorado". The XLR is not the "Coupe De Ville".

Why is it that arguably the most "old man" of the GM makes is the least interested in reliving the good ol' days? The whole thing seems flipped over IMHO.

It's one thing to continue a marque. It's another to drag it back from the grave to tart up a car that has no business wearing the name. That's why we can all look past the Mustang II but become enraged at the new Charger.

And don't get me started on ripping off other carmaker's new version of old cars!! Behold this nail in the coffin:

I had a Mustang II Cobra II as my first car so I am kind of partial towards them. A guy called it a front wheel drive Pinto  till I dusted him  (Ran low 13's in the early 80"s :-D ). In the 80"s the Ford Probe was to be badged as a Mustang. Ford got so many letters they scraped the idea and carried the fox chassis till the sn95 took over. The manufacturers have cycled between round and square designs since the beginning of the car. They need to get some new designers with enough balls to design a car with the "cool" factor like the new Mustang, SSR, Viper, Mazda 6, etc.. Not like the GTO, It's hard to tell what it is from the back, looks like a Neon or Saturn, the front looks like a Grand Am. The Caddy's are IMO ugly, but at least they stand out. Years ago you could tell a car from a 1/4 mile away, now you can't tell until you see the emblems. As for the new Mustang, I am a Ford guy, but that needs some help. 300Hp my ass. My Mustang must have 500Hp in comparison. And what is with the cheap plastic interior(directionals, wipers, shifter) they look like they are out of an old KIA.

The Viper is the standout there. Though it has its roots in the original AC/Shelby Cobra it's more of a variation on a theme than a blatant ripoff. The design stands on its own, and rightly deserves to be a brand-new marque...even though vipers and cobras are in the same species. :?

We need more standouts like the Viper. Strong, independent car designs that create new bloodlines rather than dilute old ones.

The SSR, though interesting is more a part of retro-mania than a new design. I doubt you'll see the model continue for more than a few years. How does one evolve a model that is a throwback to yesteryear?

But then again Mazda has been doing it with their Miata....which is a pretty direct replica of the Lotus Elan:

1969 Lotus Elan

1992 Mazda Miata

The latest Mazdas are good, fresh designs. BMW is also breaking its mold somewhat lately though this seems to be getting some push-back kind of like when Ducati jumped from the 996 to the 999 design.

For some reason the American carmakers cannot come up with (or hold onto) strong new marques....even the Fiero (which was originally built to be a competitor for the Corvette) could've been more than it was if it had actually received the support it deserved. Maybe it'd still be around today, like Toyota's MR-S (the evolution of the MR-2).
